5 Easy Steps to Increase Your Home’s Kerb Appeal

What is Kerb Appeal?

Kerb appeal is the first impression your property makes on a prospective buyer when they get their first glimpse of your home. The facade of your home is what most buyers will see first—either first-hand or in the photos accompanying your listing, and so if first impressions count for anything, it makes sense to do all you can to ensure that your house looks as appealing and enticing as possible when a potential buyer first sees your listing online or pulls up outside.

But if you’re looking to sell your home and move, or rent out your property, there are any number of expenses involved and so it might not be the case that you have huge sums in reserve to be able to undertake major renovations on the exterior of your home to increase its value and attract more potential buyers.

However, there are a number of things that you can do quite easily and relatively cheaply that will enhance your kerb appeal and make your home more desirable to prospective purchasers.

1. Repainting gives a fresh new look that doesn’t cost the earth to achieve

Removing old and flaky paint from your exterior walls and then applying a fresh coat is a simple way to spruce up the look of your home. A property that looks neglected is naturally going to make a poor first impression, and so it’s important to ensure that exterior walls are looking at their best. Use a wet abrasive blasting to machine to strip away old layers of paint and other contaminants before repainting to ensure that the new paint adheres to your brickwork or rendering more effectively, giving a better finish and longer-lasting protection.

2. Restore your stonework to its former glory

Adelaide heritage and period cottages and houses are often constructed from soft stone such as sandstone, limestone and bluestone and while these do look good, with age they can nevertheless end up looking quite dirty and uncared for, particularly if you live in an inner suburb where there’s a lot of traffic or construction work.

It really pays to look at ways of restoring and revitalising your stonework when you’re intending to sell. Although Adelaide stone can be delicate, dustless blasting allows you to remove soot, grime and fume build up with causing any damage to the soft surface of the stone, meaning that your stonework appears at its best without any risk of damage to its structural integrity.

A contemporary home built from modern brick will likewise benefit from a thorough cleaning to remove the build up that results from exhaust fumes, dust, dirt and general wear and tear over the years. Using a sandblasting machine can get rid of discolouration and a build up of grime and make the exterior walls of your home look brighter and cleaner so that it becomes a more attractive prospect.

3. Make your outdoor living space a feature

Outdoor living areas are a very attractive and welcome feature especially to buyers with families. However, with a lot of human traffic and use, concrete, tiles, paving stones or decking can get dirty, stained and generally tired-looking quite easily. Sandblasting is a quick and easy way to clean grime, stains and oil from your outdoor living or BBQ area, making the whole space look inviting and highlighting its value as desirable feature.

If you have a concrete or stone patio or verandah, either at the front of your home or out the back, it’s likely to have had a lot of use and foot traffic over the years. If you entertain in any of these outdoor spaces, they’ve probably also acquired their fair share of food and drink stains and dirty footmarks too, along with things like pot plant stains, while the overall look can deteriorate over time simply through receiving a lot of use.

As a good-sized patio, attractive verandah or outdoor decking can be a real asset to a home and impact on its resale value, it’s worth the time and effort to get these spaces looking at their best. You can clean concrete, tiles and any sort of stone or paved surface, as well as wooden decking, by hiring a wet abrasive blasting machine that will quickly blast away dirt and deeper stains without marking or damaging the surface.

If you have outdoor furniture, this too can benefit from being spruced up. Abrasive blasting is an effective way of stripping away old layers of lacquer and other protective coatings from wooden benches, chairs, sun loungers and any other outdoor furniture. It’s also an effective way of stripping away old layers of paint from wrought iron garden furniture, as well as rust and the other contaminants to which it can be prone. Once the old paint has been blasted away, the surface is profiled so that new layers of paint and protective coatings will adhere more effectively to the newly-cleaned surface.

If you have any statues and other types of outdoor artwork or decorative features in the garden that are in need of a clean up, abrasive blasting is suitable for use on the most delicate of projects, so you can clean a piece of statuary without any loss of definition or damage to its features.

4. Don’t let your fence keep a potential buyer out

A front garden fence is great for both looks and security, but if it’s not looking pristine it can create a bad first impression. If you have a brick or stone fence, wet abrasive blasting can strip away graffiti or exhaust fume build up while not compromising its structural integrity. This means that the brick or stone again looks at tis best, and you’re presenting the outside of your home to the world in the best possible light.

If your fence is made from steel or wrought iron, stripping away old, flaking and chipped paint and then applying a new coat can make a great difference. Using a dustless blasting machine is a quick and effective way of getting rid not only of old layers of paint, but also rust, corrosion and other contaminants, and in so doing you extend your fence’s longevity and effectiveness. Abrasive blasting also profiles steel, metal and iron in such a way that protective coatings and new layers of paint adhere more effectively to the surface, meaning there is better long-term protection as well.

5. A clean driveway helps to bring the buyers in

Driveways in particular are an area where a through cleaning can make a world of difference. It doesn’t take much for the area to become oil-stained, discoloured and covered in tyre marks which can create a poor impression.

Hiring a portable sandblasting machine can enable you to get rid of these stains and general discolouration, meaning that the concrete or stone on the drive looks clean and inviting, and the exterior of your house appears well cared for. Using sandblasting equipment doesn’t damage the concrete or stone in any way and removes rubber marks, oil stains, and water discolouration quickly and effectively.
